About Nefes
The Nefes ensemble was founded in October 2019. It explores the expressive power of collective vocal performance, combining polyphonic singing techniques with the performative dimensions of music, theatre and dance. The ensemble works on contemporary arrangements of traditional melodies as well as original compositions inspired by this repertoire, aiming to create complete stage performances.
Since its foundation, Nefes has presented the performances The Mediterranean Sings and From Love to Death at festivals and venues including Tentart Festival (Drama), Cosmopolis Festival (Kavala), the 3rd Handmade & Recycled Theater Festival (Athens), and the Folklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia–Thrace.
In 2023, the ensemble recorded its first album.
In May 2023, Nefes presented the sound performance Disorderly World – A Motet for Versions of Voices as part of the Open Theatre Stage of the City, organised by the Directorate of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
During the summers of 2024 and 2025, the ensemble presented A CAPELLA – The Suite of Imaginary Beings at various music venues and open-air theatres in Thessaloniki, as well as at Verdant Festival.
In the summer of 2026, Nefes presented the performance My Story at Amalia Theatre.
Alongside its artistic activity, Nefes has also functioned as a research laboratory, with projects developed at the Music Village of Pelion (2023 and 2024), with the En Dynamei Ensemble, and in Sicily as part of the international Ursino Buskers Festival.
Since 2025, Nefes has participated in the educational programme Songs of Shame, implemented within the framework of the European project POWER, which focuses on combating gender-based violence.
