Εργαστήριο Αρμένικου Τραγουδιού!
Armenian Song
*woskshop with Shushan Kerovpyan*
[Open to every level]
We will learn some songs from the Armenian tradition, which have been preserved and passed on throughout the 20th century until today, in the Diaspora and in the Republic of Armenia.
The songs will be learned in their traditional and "rough" form, a capella, and following the modal tradition.
We will get familiar with the mode and the variations in each song, the lyrics and meanings.
Many songs can also be danced! Learning the dances will help us feel the rhythm, the groove and the spirit of the song… and fully engage our bodies in the music and singing.
Shushan Kerovpyan
Born in Paris to a family of musicians, Shushan Kerovpyan was immersed from early age into Armenian and Middle-Eastern traditional musics. She learned Armenian modal singing by oral transmission from her parents, Aram and Virginia Kerovpyan, who have been singing and teaching this traditional repertoire (both folk and liturgical) and approach during the last 40 years. She is also a founding member of Collectif Medz Bazar since 2012.
Shushan’s musical world is strongly influenced by folk and soul music from her partly American roots, as well as different folk musics from Latin America, southern Europe and the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern musical worlds, which have colored her Parisian life. She plays and sings in Collectif Medz Bazar (French-Armenian-Turkish band), The Circle Orchestra (Greek music), Akn Ensemble (Armenian liturgical choir), Kerovpyan ensemble (Armenian traditional and troubadour music), and occasionally takes part in other various projects.
